What is SuperfLat?

The image above is from Takashi Murakami's collaboration with designer Marc Jacobs for the Louis Vuitton purse that was all the rage with Japanese women between the ages of 15 and 45 a few seasons back. For an answer to the question 'What does SuperfLat mean?' it would be easier to show you some of that style of contemporary Japanese artwork than trying to describe it. See the attached gallery

to see a painting and sculpture by Takashi Murakami, the artist who first coined the term 'Superflat', which is both a style of art AND a philosphical/aesthetic theory particular to postmodern Japan. More galleries and postings to follow in coming weeks
